Abstract

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 2.8% hydrogen peroxide(H202) whitening gel on stained Hydroxyapatite(HA) specimens using simple treatment and the Oral Simulation Model.

Methods: Artificial HA specimens were stained using the Stooltey¡¯s method. The bleaching materials used in the study were classified into three groups: 2.8% hydrogen peroxide gel, whitening toothpaste containing Tetrasodium Pyprophosphate combined with hydroxyapatite and the BSI toothpaste without whitening ingredients. This study was composed with simple treatment and Oral Simulation Model. Color change of HA specimens between before and after was measured by the MINOLTA Spectrophotometer(CM-35OOd, Japan). The results were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and repeated measures ANOVA using SPSS 12.0 statistical package program(SPSS Inc. U.S.A).

Results: According to the simple treatment, L value of 2.8% HzOz gel significantly increased in whitening toothpaste(p<0.05). Brightness changes(A,L*) through Oral Simulation Model showed that the group with 2.8% hydrogen peroxide gel and whitening toothpaste indicated the highest whitening effect. There were statistically significant differences in other experimental groups(p<0.05).

Conclusions: Whitening gel containing 2.8% hydrogen peroxide has been shown to be an effective tooth whitening in vitro. In addition, the whitening gel had synergistic effect with whitening toothpaste.
